As a part of the ongoing five-week Reticular Materials Bootcamp, participants were led through the synthesis and characterization of several different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). The participants ranged from established faculty members to research associates, graduate, and undergraduate students. Unsurprisingly, everyone was able to grow beautiful crystals of the targeted materials!

Associate Director Kyle E. Cordova was invited to give a public lecture at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the natural sciences. His talk, "An Obsession with Discovery", detailed the lessons he has learned in his journey through science with the aim of inspiring the students to dig deep in pursuing their own scientific career.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, honored BGSI’s Founding Director, Prof. Omar M. Yaghi, with the “Mohammed Bin Rashid Medal for Scientific Excellence” for his lifetime achievements in scientific research. The award was presented to Prof. Yaghi in the presence of Crown Prince of Dubai Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Deputy Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

KFUPM (Saudi Arabia) recently celebrated the successful Ph.D. thesis defense of the Saudi Aramco CO2 Capture and Utilization Chair Program's first Ph.D. student, Dr. Mahmoud M. Abdelnaby. Dr. Mahmoud's research ("Synthesis and Characterization of Porous Polymers and Metal-Organic Framework/Polymer Composites for Carbon Capture") was carried out under the guidance of Prof. Omar M. BGSI Distinguished Affiliate Scholar, Prof. Osamu Terasaki, delivered a workshop for our global science node FORMS (UPM, Malaysia) on November 29-30, 2019. Prof. Terasaki lectured on the fundamentals of electron microscopy with a particular focus on the uses and applicability of SEM and TEM in structural characterization of soft-materialsThe workshop also included a hands-on component, in which Prof. Terasaki explained how engineers approach carrying out TEM and SEM operations, including sample preparation. Associate Director Kyle E. Cordova visited the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) in Amman, Jordan to discuss and promote global science in Jordan. During the visit, Mr. Cordova held roundtable discussions with leading RSS scientists and officials as well as Princess Sumaya University of Technology graduate students. Topics covered were how to strengthen the research ecosystem in Jordan, provide more research opportunities to emerging scholars, and create science-based outreach programs that would engage and inspire the public at large.

As a result of BGSI's participation in the 2017 World Science Forum in Jordan, our global science center at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), led by Dr. Bassem A. Al-Maythalony, established collaborations with a team of Jordanian researchers, led by Dr. Abdussalam K. Qaroush, Dr. Ala'a F. Eftaiha, and Dr. Khaleel I. Assaf. Their collaboration resulted in a research article on carbon capture using a sugar-based absorbent.

The 2018 Wolf Prize in Chemistry recognized two important figures in modern inorganic chemistry. Prof. Makoto Fujita was honored “for conceiving metal-directed assembly principles leading to large highly porous complexes,” and Prof. Omar M. Yaghi was honored “for pioneering reticular chemistry via metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs).”

Over the course of October 4-5, 2018, Founding and Associate Directors Omar M. Yaghi and Kyle E. Cordova, together with BGSI Distinguished Affiliate Scholar  Lars Öhrström, attended the 2nd Symposium on Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Southern Africa in Botswana. The symposium partnered a number of terrific scientists hailing from the University of Cape Town, University of Zimbabwe, University of Botswana, and the University of Namibia with distinguished international researchers.

The 2nd Symposium on Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Southern Africa will be taking place October 4-5, 2018 at the University of Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana. The objective of this symposium is to present the forefront of organic and inorganic chemistry through scientific talks given by invited international lectures and southern African emerging scientists in the area.
